This is just something of an idea I want to flesh out more, written in just a me babbling form.
The earth is a sentient being, with feelings, emotions and a physical body-relation to humans. How and why did the earth become associated only with female properties? Was this association to make it easier for men to destroy and rape the precious land by making her no more than a simple woman? Who cares if men mine her fertile body with large machines with no thought to either how this affects her natural cycles? Who cares if men tear down the beautiful trees that cover her landscape adding to her beauty? Who cares if men continue to pollute her following waters of life so that she can no longer give life but barely sustain the burden that has been placed on her? While men have been, throughout history, destroying and degrading our Mother, the place where we all originate-not made from some lump of clay but birthed forth from her loving embrace to journey with her as she grows. Paula Allen Gunn has a wonderful view on this feeling that “the earth herself is on a transformative journey and we, humans, are allowed to remain on her through it. We can either transform with her or be destroyed as she changes.” This is paraphrased from a much larger piece but it says something that many women and goddess worshippers believe. Many think that the destructive weather our beloved earth has been feeling is due to environmental problems-um HELLO!!!!!! She’s pissed-the earth herself is an extension of the goddess-when you begin to destroy the home a goddess do you think she will sit idly by? No, her and her counterpart, which in this case is the earth herself, are attempting to make people see that they are destroying the largest things that help them to live. We live in a technological world where many people spend more time behind a computer screen than they do actually communing with nature. There is a growing movement to return to a “green” lifestyle but honestly-how much of it really is appreciating the nature and love swelling up from the earth. I do not think badly of these people, please don’t think that, I simply wish that along with their cloth shopping bags and compost pile, they would take the time to build a garden, to find a place untouched by computers or people and just sit under a tree and feel what the universe is trying to say. The goddess speaks through the earth from the simple rustle of tree leaves to the uncontrollable tsunami’s that devastate countries; and by this logic the earth also speaks through the goddess. They are one. Both have presented humankind with the path that they are travelling, the way their transformation is proceeding-now people need to listen more closely and walk the path with them or fall off the side when the wheel starts to turn.
