Taking care of you.

Everyday is a hurried through the world kind of day.   Look around you and you will see people running from place to place with little thought about themselves, taking care of this errand, that thing that needed done or those people who need cared for.  Putting ourselves last has, it seems, become almost a national past time.  We look out for work, co-workers, family, friends and lastly ourselves.

This seems horribly off balance to me and one thing that we as spiritual beings can easily fix.  We are walking a spiritual path that encourages the use of meditation, magick and energetic workings to promote balance and care for ourselves and those around us.  Why then, is it we often do not think and take care of ourselves?

It seems my own waking moments are often take up with this worry about getting this task or project done, returning this call, helping out this person or getting through the work day with some semblance of sanity left in an otherwise insane world. 😉

Taking care of yourself can be quite easy and take up very little time in your day.  Back in my First Degree work at Sacred Mists, we were taught the steps of Ritual and to look at our daily routines for the steps of ritual within them.  Somewhere we’ve all moved on and forgotten how easy ritual can be.  We all start the day the same pretty much every day how is this not ritual?

Everyday I wake up, cuddle with my cats and pup for a moment or two.  I get out of bed, do the upstairs cat litter, wash my hands, splash my face, brush my teeth.  Time for a shower, get dressed, breakfast, hubby off to work.  Two days a week the pup stays home with me and three she goes to Daycamp for more playtime than I can give her during the day.

After the hubby goes off to work, my day varies a little depending on the day but it involves the crafting of paper or some other small crafting project that I have started, maybe some light email, some review on the Sacred Mists forums, then I settle down about a quarter till 10 for my day to start.  I light my altar candles (on my desk), a stick of incense and take a deep breath or three to focus on my day.

I work for a couple hours, take a lunch break then get back to work and might take a short afternoon break but often do not because I become so busy I forget.  Sometimes I forget to drink my water on my desk!  These forgets are easy to get past and fix.

Throughout the day, I’ve started taking one or two minutes to focus on my altar candle burning and will send a little reiki to whomever pops into my mind right then.  After this I will spend a moment to be kind to myself.  I will do a couple of deep breath exercises, get out a piece of my Sizzling Spell Paper and cut it into a strip only large enough for an affirmation.  Write my affirmation down and then light it. POOF. A kindness to myself.  It’s been maybe three minutes and I am feeling refreshed now.

Can’t light things at work?  That is OK.  Take a moment and close your eyes, do a deep breath exercise that will bring you back to center.  Don’t forget to smile when doing this!  Your spirit will thank you for the smile!

Get up to use the rest room?  Great take time to be kind to yourself while you are at it.  When washing your hands, look at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself (even silently if there are others around) that you are awesome!

Now…these are just a few ideas that have crossed my mind while writing today, what can you do in your day to make it more magickal AND take care of your own needs and spirit?
