Today brings us to the “end” of the elemental workings as we focus on that of spirit.  What is spirit?  Spirit is the light and life that brings everything together.  Where does it come from?  What can it teach us?  Spirit is everything and nothing.  The breath of the universe and the spark of divinity that is in everything around us.  It is the alchemy that binds us, moves us, transforms us.  This brings us unity and magick and to the core of divinity.

Absorbing Spirit:

Close your eyes and see yourself sitting silently and alone in the center of a room with nothing in it.  You see the walls and the floor are completely devoid of any adornments and trappings.  It’s simply you and the empty space of the room.  Slowly you begin to realize that you are not in an entirely empty room, there is light twinkling in and out of spaces.  You continue breathing gently and purposefully and notice that the twinkling of light is increasing as you breath until you are encircled by twinkling lights.  Know you are safe in this circle of light it cannot harm you.  With this knowledge you realize you are being surrounded by the element of spirit, the light of that and the universe protect you.

Continue breathing deeply and with each breath, you breathe in the element of spirit.  The light of spirit begins to fill your entire body filling you with an amazing warmth and weightlessness, count how many breaths it takes until you are completely filled with the element of spirit.  What does it feel like to be filled with spirit? Where does the spirit not move cleanly through you Where does it become broken, where does it not exist or move too quickly? See these areas and what they correspond to. Mentally and emotionally allow the element to help repair the damage and the element will exist evenly and throughout.

Once spirit is flowing and pulsing fully within you, you are ready to project it back out of your being, thankful for the blessing of balance it has given you.

Continue breathing evenly. With each breath you project a bead of spirit. You will project the same number of beads of the element that you breathed in. With each exhalation of the element you remain balanced within this element.

Today marks the final day in the elemental work we’ve been doing and I must say that I feel much more balanced than I did when I started this little project out.  Today I feel light hearted, free and filled with joy.  There is a lot to do (like any day) but even the crankiest thing will not affect me.  This process will be one that I do monthly going forward and perhaps more than one element a day not sure but it will be ongoing.  I definitely feel different.

Have you been following along?  Have you been joining me in these exercises?  How do you feel?

It’s Elemental – Earth

I’ve gotten “caught” up in my posts so that none are missing, despite the one being a day late for yesterday’s Water post.  Today I am working with Earth.  Earth, happens to be my weakest element.  There is something very smothering about it in many ways and so controlling.  I have never been able to “completely let go” and soar because Earth seems to just hold on.

What is the element Earth?  Aside from being our bodies, our home and filled with wonder?  Earth grounds us, protects us and shelters us.  Earth is a great provider.  Our food is of the earth, we are enriched by it’s beauty, we are in awe of the destructive forces it can unleash upon us.

Absorbing Earth:

Close your eyes. See yourself sitting calmly in nature (someplace where you can touch the ground such as a forest, cave or meadow). Nothing exists but you Earth around you. Feel the texture and weight of the Earth around you. See how the Earth moves with each breath you take. Breathe deeply, Earth does not become agitated , but appears to be swirling gently around you. It is creating a circle around you. Know that you are safe in this circle of earth. The earth cannot harm you, but is protecting you. Nothing exists but you and the circle of earth which has surrounded you.

Continue breathing deeply, with each breath you are being filled with the Element, you are breathing in the element itself. Slowly the Element begins filling your being. Count each breath in, Keep this count, see this as a bead, how many breaths does it take for Element to fill your being? Remember this number. The characteristics of Element have filled your being. What does it feel like to be filled with earth? Where does the earth not move cleanly through you Where does it become broken, where does it not exist or move too quickly? See these areas and what they correspond to. Mentally and emotionally allow the Element to help repair the damage and the Element will exist evenly and throughout.

Once your Element is flowing evenly and steadily, you are ready to project that element back out of your being.

Continue breathing evenly. With each breath you project a bead of Earth. You will project the same number of beads of the element that you breathed in. With each exhalation of the element you remain balanced with this Element.

This exercise is always difficult for me.  I always feel as if I am being suffocated.  As a result of that it takes me considerably longer to “fill” myself as I have to take it slowly in order to keep the panic of suffocation at bay.  One of the changes I did with this exercise is instead of the “movement” I decided to fill myself and look for cracks or fissures in the earth that has filled me.  I looked and began focusing on the energy centers of my body that exhibited a less than full amount of earth and began working to fill that by adding soil to the whole and shifting it around until the fissures closed.

I think with time this exercise will become easier as the more I work with the earth element the more comfortable I will become with it.  Maybe a few more times and I won’t have a near panic attack. *laugh*

It’s Elemental – Water

I missed writing yesterday, I did the work but never got a chance to get to the laptop to write about it.  The day was quite good in the way it all worked out and sometimes computer free days are nice. 🙂  As I continue working through the elements, yesterday was Water.

Water is a great balancer for me.  When I am feeling “too hot” or in general off kilter Water always balances me right out.  So what does water control?  Well there are a lot of thoughts here rolling around.  The body is comprised of a majority water and “liquid” cells.  Water lubricates.  Water is the giver of life, without it we could not survive.  Water is emotion, fluid and joyous.  As with the previous two exercises I used my absorption method from my First Degree training at Sacred Mists.

Absorbing Water:
Close your eyes. See yourself sitting calmly near a body of water. Nothing exists but you and the water, enter the water. Feel the weight of the water around you. See how the water moves with each breath you take. Breathe deeply, water does not become agitated , but appears to be swirling gently around you. It is creating a circle of water around you. Know that you are safe in this circle of water. The water cannot harm you, but is protecting you. Nothing exists but you and the circle of water which has surrounded you.

What does it feel like to be filled with water? Where does the water not move cleanly through you Where does it become broken, where does it not exist or swirl too quickly? See these areas and what they correspond to. Mentally and emotionally allow the Element to help repair the damage and the Element will exist evenly and throughout.

Once your Element is flowing evenly and steadily, you are ready to project that element back out of your being.

Continue breathing evenly. With each breath you project a bead of Water. You will project the same number of beads of the element that you breathed in. With each exhalation of the element you remain balanced with this Element.

From the base exercise (above) I made even more modifications today.  I was out and about doing my weekend walk with my husband and pups along the waterfront & ferry terminal.  Due to the hustle and bustle about me I made this a little shorter of an exercise.  I took a few moments of “me” stretch time and sat along the guard rails while they walked on ahead.  I closed my eyes and breathed in the water of the Bay.  The water here is a little different than I am used to so the inner buoyancy that I received was significantly more.  My emotions bobbed up and down with each breath and soon I was completely filled up to the brim.  The emotions floated in this water and slowly became saturated.  They were “weighed” down so that they were more palpable and easier to work with.  As I ended this exercise I breathed out the water in the same breaths as in.  When it was all left I felt cleansed, balanced and blissful in heart.

Would I do it this way again? Yes I think so.  It might have been a little more effective than previously done in fresh water baths and pools.  I felt peaceful and delighted and remained that way for the rest of the day.

It’s Elemental – Fire

In continuing the theme of working with the elements, my next step is that of Fire.  As with yesterday I begin by doing the fire absorption exercise that I modified from my first degree training at Sacred Mists.  These exercises are actually quite good to maintain some balance within the elements and within your body.  I recommend doing them regularly and am working on adding them back into my practice for at minimum monthly to help keep my balance in place and to gain strength in working with each element.

Absorbing Fire:

Close your eyes. See yourself sitting calmly next to a camp-sized fire. Nothing exists but you and this fire. Feel the warmth of this fire. See how the fire grows with each breath you take. Breathe deeply, the fire does not grow in height but in general size. It is creating a circle of fire around you. Know that you are safe in this circle of fire. The Fire cannot harm you, but is protecting you. Nothing exists but you and the circle of flame which has surrounded you.

Continue breathing deeply, with each breath you are filled with warmth, you are breathing in the element of Fire itself. Slowly the fire begins filling your being. Count each breath in, Keep this count, see this as a bead, how many breaths does it take for Fire to fill your being? Remember this number. The characteristics of fire have filled your being. What does it feel like to be filled with Fire. Where does the fire not burn brightly? Where does it burn out, smolder or burn too hotly? See these areas and what they correspond to. Mentally and emotionally allow the fire to help repair the damage and the fire will burn evenly and throughout.

Once your Fire is burning evenly and steadily, you are ready to project that element back out of your being.

Continue breathing evenly. With each breath you project a bead of fire. You will project the same number of beads of the element that you breathed in. With each exhalation of the element you remain balanced with this Element. Count again the number of beads, you must exhale exactly the same number of times you inhaled.

As before I still myself and close my eyes.  Each time I have done this exercise I always feel invigorated after it.  I see the campfire before me and with each breath it grows in size until it surrounds me completely.  Once I am fully circled I begin breathing in the fire allowing it’s searing warmth to fill my entire being. With each breath I become warmer and warmer until there was only fire and an awareness of spirit that expanded with the fire.  My awareness became passion, my breath destruction, my body life.  Energy imbalances burned away to ash and from deep within I felt alive and in every candle, every volcano and every burning fire.  From the ash left behind the world started anew.  Both terrifying and beautiful at once.  I became aware of myself slowly and remembered to breathe the fire out in the same number of breaths I brought it in.  The embers began to cool with each breath and my awareness was coming back to my home where I sat.  The sounds of the dogs and cats and my husband became once again at the front of my mind and the fires had been cooled.  The invigoration of spirit present but of body oddly at peace and content.

Have you tried this exercise?  Does it intrigue you?  What happens when you reach into your own awareness and bring fire forth.  For a few moments let the passion of fire, the destruction and fertilization for growth overcome  you.  Oh yes there is a need for me doing this regularly.  Tomorrow we will journey into water to see what the emotion and life brings to our balance.  Stay tuned. 😉

It’s very elemental – Air

For the next several days we are going to be talking about the elements.  I’ve decided to start with air, as I would in calling a circle.

During my studies with Sacred Mists, in the first degree, we did a series of exercises called “Elemental Absorption”.  The goal of these exercises was that through meditation we completely absorb what it is to be “one with an element”.  This does several things, it helps us, as witches, become more balanced within the elements themselves and to find areas of imbalance or “weakness” and work within that particular element to find balance.

Today I focus on Air, I know that this is an element that I am strong in. The wind is my breath, the breeze my heartbeat.  To get the ball rolling I will first share the modified Absorption exercise.  Modified?  Yes, I took the original exercises and modified them slightly to work a little better for me.  This is that modified version.

Absorbing Air:
Close your eyes. See yourself sitting calmly. Nothing exists but you. Feel the weight of the air around you. See how the air moves with each breath you take. Breathe deeply, the air does not become diluted, but appears to be swirling gently around you. It is creating a circle of air around you. Know that you are safe in this circle of air. The Air cannot harm you, but is protecting you. Nothing exists but you and the circle of swirling air which has surrounded you.

Where does the Element not swirl evenly? Where does it become broken, where does it not exist or swirl too quickly? See these areas and what they correspond to. Mentally and emotionally allow the Element to help repair the damage and the Element will exist evenly and throughout.

Once your Element is swirling evenly and steadily, you are ready to project that element back out of your being.

Continue breathing evenly. With each breath you project a bead of Air. You will project the same number of beads of the element that you breathed in. With each exhalation of the element you remain balanced with this Element. Count again the number of beads, you must exhale exactly the same number of times you inhaled.

Conscious Spirit Oracle Card and Chrysalis Tarot Card for 10/24/2014

Conscious Spirit Oracle Card and Chrysalis Tarot Card for 10/24/2014

The modifications I made to this exercise help me find the exact spots within my body that are, essentially, deficient in the element of air.  This exercise does not take very long generally and it’s one that I try to remember to do at least once a month.  Granted, lately it has been longer in between doing them and I can certainly tell that is the case.  When I did this today I found a great many places that the air did not move freely through my body.  Most prominently was within my “root chakra” area that area that controls safety and security as well as my “sacral chakra” which when imbalanced can lead to feelings of insecurity and helplessness.  Yes, this makes sense to me.  So I spent a few minutes focusing on the air in those areas and freed up some of the movement.  I should do this exercise at least once a week for the time being.

In addition to this exercise I did pull my Conscious Spirit Oracle Card and a card from the Chrysalis Tarot.  Today’s reading is representative entirely of where I am in my life and day and makes sense.  My Oracle Card is “Balance” with affirmation “I understand and embrace the opposing forces in life that bring about balance”  This absolutely makes sense to me as I work to regain balance in my life from being knocked about and over consistently.  My Tarot card is the Ten of Scrolls which depicts a regal tiger surrounded by the scrolls. This is about restriction and finding oneself surrounded by the trials of life.  The strength and will of the tiger will aid in getting through these issues.

Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Spirit

Spirituality Site

Earth, air, fire, water, and sometimes spirit – the elements regarded by almost all religions as necessary to life and in some cases containing great power.

In some of the Pagan and Wiccan rituals earth, air, fire, and water are called upon to perform spells and rituals. Especially in Druidism the elements are very important- connecting with the earth and feeling the nature as it relates with each of us.

Even in Christianity the elements are mentioned.

Adam was created by God from the Earth, and when we die we return to the earth. And after God created Adam’s body He breathed life into him. The Holy Trinity is made up of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and each person is given a spirit when he is created.

Then just looking at it from a scientific standpoint; the body is made up of 60% water (in the average adult male – it can vary from 45 – 70 depending on fat volume). And a person can only live about 3-4 days without water.

We also need heat. The discovery of fire has long been touted as man’s first great discovery – and his first step towards becoming the modern man we are today. Hypothermia (the loss of the body’s core temperature) – can be deadly if the body loses more than 9 degrees (dropping to 89.9 degrees). On the other hand, damage can occur with hyperthermia – the rising of the body’s temperature above 104 degrees.

We obviously need air. While we can survive 4-6 weeks without food (depending on our body’s fat composition) and 2-3 days without water, we can only go 3 minutes without oxygen.

Earth is a little more esoteric. The food we eat comes from the earth; vegetables, fruit, grains- or the meat we eat has survived on the food from the earth. Imagine when you were a child and you would roll down the hill during the summer. You would get dirty, collect flower puffs, blow on them and make wishes, and climb trees. In other words, you were totally one with the earth – and there was an energy there that most of us miss as adults stuck in brick building with fluorescent lighting.

Spirit – this is the internal essence of us all; the part that makes us unique. Opposable thumbs make us different from other mammals. Intelligence and deduction make us different from apes. But it is spirit that makes us different from one another, that makes us who we are. It is indefinable, but undeniable.

And how long can we survive without Spirit, without hope? Maybe we do on the outside for years, but internally – less time than we can without air. Think of the last time someone you loved hurt you badly or took your hope away. It is like feeling dead, like walking through the day with no spirit.

No matter what religion you adhere to – you need these five elements. And paying attention to them, and giving them the time and attention they deserve can help bring a peace and centeredness to your life. So the next time you take a vacation – give yourself to nature, and get in touch with the elements. Have a picnic next to a stream, make a sandcastle, and build a fire to make s’mores in the evening.

And sleep with peaceful dreams that night.
