Through the fog

Hann's Park Feb. 2013. Good morning Sunshine!

Hann’s Park Feb. 2013. Good morning Sunshine!

It’s been several days since I’ve written and I can feel that.  I try to write everyday but sometimes it’s just hard.  Life gets in the way of writing and when that happens I have to remember to be gentle with myself about it.  I’ve been sick for the last 4 or 5 days.  It’s a head cold so nothing that a doctor can do anything about, it just needs to run it’s course and be gone.  I’ve tried to be kind to myself while I need the extra rest and not overdo it.  It’s hard, when you are used to GOING on weekends and getting stuff done to realize that the nap in the middle of the day is absolutely necessary.  Being in bed by 8 also necessary.  I just could not stay awake even when I was taking dayquil so I tried to not fight it.

This morning dawned early, as with all weekdays.  We get up at 5:30 and get the day started so that by 6:30 we can leave the house to take my husband to the ferry so he can be to work by 8:30 at the latest.  It’s a long day but one that is routine for us.  By 9am I start work (at the latest) and then go through everything that needs to be done.  At 5pm I am done and start working on dinner and feeding the fur-kids and any chores left undone from the morning.  Leave to pick up K by 5:55 then we are home by 6:30p and then it’s dinner for us and winding down from the day.

This is a glance at the daily routine for us.  Let’s throw in being sick and then you can see a thick layer of fog descending into place.  It’s hard to see through.  You become unsteady and need extra breaks from the simplest things.  Slowly the fog lifts and you regain health.  I am able to start seeing through the fog of this head cold finally so there is progress on it.  My goals for today are simple.  Don’t nap. Get as much work done as possible and do so with a smile.

It seems that it’s been a while since I was able to smile all day long and more than anything I would love to find that happy place again.  Hopeful that it is on the other side of this fog I move on.  No more anger and “flying off the handle” over silly things.  Finding balance is going to be key.  Fall is finally here so perhaps that will help me get there.  Slowly I move through the fog and look for the sunshine that is hidden somewhere within.

Writing and being sick

Smoke flows and moves through roaring flames. A visible reminder of the clearance of that which no longer serves

Smoke flows and moves through roaring flames. A visible reminder of the clearance of that which no longer serves

Sometimes you just get the crap in life that sticks in your head and throat.  I’m talking about getting a head cold of course.  Yesterday, I did not write. I was not well and writing a spiritual post when I was feeling so horribly was simply not in the cards for me.  Today I feel no better but need to at least try to write something.

I try to lead a spirit driven life.  In my life I prefer to make informed decisions that do not go against what my heart says.  Sometimes this is not going to happen and I accept that.  Right now I am sitting in bed with my laptop.  I have been off and on working and laying down all morning.  It’s now noon.  I’ve had a bowl of fabulous homemade chicken noodle soup, taken some more medication for symptom relief and waiting.  I am moving through emails at a snails pace.  I need to get a few things done.  I will it will just take me longer.

Sometimes your body tells you to SLOW DOWN.  You are doing too much.  You are not taking care of yourself the way you need to.  So, I slow down.  I breathe as well as my sinus’ allow me to and I close my eyes frequently.  Sometimes I drift off to sleep and other times I drift away in a meditative like state.  All of these are seemingly necessary.  My goal today is to be like smoke.  Smoke flows and moves through roaring flames, through cracks and crevices finding a way to move and simply be.  It is a visible reminder that in order to live at some point you have to clear that which no longer serves you.  Right now, being busy and harried no longer serves me.  I rest.  I recuperate.  I am smoke.

Animal Magick – Working with Dragonfly

DragonflyI’m continuing the thread of sharing a bit about my personal power animals and the journey’s to discover them.  I previously mentioned that I worked with Marisol for many years  in her capacity as Shaman and guide for journey.  When I first began working with animal energies I had no idea that my attraction to certain animals was an indicator of having them as a power animal.  I have loved dragonflies for many years and they have allowed me to get extremely close to them for messages and for pictures over the years. The picture to the left is a prime example of that closeness.  I was using a 18-50mm lens on my Nikon D70.

When I first began the journey of course I was worried that I would find nothing at the lower world.  I understand that this is a fairly common thing along with the “I imagined the whole thing”.  During my first journey I met my primary power animals which are Dragonfly, White Peacock and Black Panther.  Surprisingly the black panther made itself known during the journey first.  He’s a cool cat but we will talk about him tomorrow or Friday.  Today I wanted to talk about Dragonfly.

Dragonfly is all about transformation and adaptability.  It carries the  wisdom of  working within the always present change in life while finding a lightness of spirit and joy in life.  Dragonfly ultimately “ruled” by two elements in water and air.  Nymphs begin life in water and ultimately take flight.  They breed and live where water is found.

When dragonfly shows up, it is a sign that change is coming or it is time to adapt and change something in your life.  As dragonfly is a constant companion for me, I am always aware of the balance I receive when near the water and the sea air.  There is joy to be had here that I cannot find anywhere else.  In the breeze I find that trials are whisked away, in the water I find myself cleansed and able to work with the emotions and things set before me.

Do you feel stuck in life, does the joy of those around you seem to slip through your hands?  If you are needing change, call upon the dragonfly to help facilitate transformation within your life.  The connection to the natural world through dragonfly is quite amazing.  Today I am calling forth my dragonfly with this mini-spell.

*light a candle of choice – I am using a blue spell candle
Ripples of water moving gently from the breeze,
Calling forth dragonfly
Three by Three
Joyous growth be at ease
Calling forth dragonfly
Three by Three
Transformative light holding the keys
Calling forth dragonfly
So Mote It Be.

Once the candle extinguishes itself I will make an offering in my backyard to bring forward the changes I am manifesting in my life.

Divination Share – Feeling It

IMG_2321There is something to be said about a daily “ritual”.  Every morning after I get the few chores done I do early and am ready to sit down, I follow the same process.  It is reassuring to do something the same everyday and to work with spirit first thing in the day.

Upon sitting down at my workspace, I will light my jar candle with a stick of incense then place the incense over on my altar.  Sitting back down I will pull my Conscious Spirit Oracle card for the day and then two Chrysalis Tarot cards.  Since we recently added two kittens to the household I have had to take down much of my daily altar at my workspace and opted for simplicity in a single jar candle and a quartz point.  The candle sits on my larger altar tile.  Near that will be both decks and my datebook.

With my space for “stuff” reduced it is interesting to see that the overall clutter is lessening as I feel compelled almost to just keep it clear and clean everyday.  This is not a bad thing just a little different for me.

Today I decided that I’d do this extra entry to share my readings.  I started with the Oracle card and the affirmation there is “I speak my truth and encourage others to speak theirs”.  Whenever I get this type of card it is generally the kind of day that inevitably causes some hurt somewhere because in speaking my truth I offend or cause hurt somewhere along the line.  It’s not intentional or even desirable for that to happen but sometimes my truth is not compatible with others.  In seeing this I wanted to pull a pair of Tarot cards to supplement the meaning for today.  I got the Ace of Mirrors and the Acrobat.  The Ace of mirrors again is drawing on feelings and speaks to us of new beginnings somewhere so it reinforces the speaking or feeling of truths.  The Acrobat is there to inspire you to rise above your troubles and “vault into a fresh reality” It seems it is about perspective combined with mobility and play that comes from lessons.

All in all this is not a bad thing today at least not as cringeworthy as I initially thought it would be.  I will be mindful of my words, as I always try to be but also be inspired to continue working and moving forward in my path and life.  I’m feeling it and acknowledging it through words and actions today.

Animal Magick + Finding your Power Animal

Newdegate Cave - Tasmania Australia

Newdegate Cave – Tasmania Australia

Last week I started writing a little about animal magick and power animals.  In working with animal energies there are a couple of ways to do it.  When I began walking this aspect of my personal path, I decided to begin by working with a shaman to learn the ways of the Shamanic Journey.  The purpose of the Journey, in this case, is to descend into the lower world (there are three worlds lower, middle and upper).  I will talk a little about each world in just a moment.  Once you arrive in the lower world you are looking for a “sign” or the arrival of your primary power animal.  This is the totem or power animal that chose to be with you since your birth in this life.   This is a time of meeting.  There of course can be many more of these as you get to know the energies of this animal and what lessons they wish to teach you.

A little bit about the three worlds that you can visit during a Shamanic Journey and what they correspond to is in order.  Let’s start with the Lower world.  The lower world is your subconscious mind, where your inner child rules and has access to the mysteries surrounding your power animals.  The middle world is the conscious mind where you can work with the energies of the waking world via magick and journey.  The upper world is the divine mind, our connection to the universe, ascended masters and teachers as well as the Akashic Records.  This is of course a summarized bit of information on these three worlds.  If you are looking for a start into journeying I recommend Michael Harner’s Way of the Shaman.

In the manner that I journey, I do so to simple drummed music.  I am a fan of Michael Harner’s Shamanic Journey Drumming.  This is a link to the drumming CD that I use (I have it burned into MP3 and use my iPhone for immersion.  Journeying does not generally take a really long time and I try to limit it to the 20 minute session.  The music has a recall where the beat changes to recall you back to reality.

Before you begin, sit quietly to ground and center yourself.  State your intention to meet your power animal.  Once you are ready begin the music then visualize yourself near the entrance of a cave.  The cave is your entrance into the lower world where the spirits of power animals are discovered and where we work within the subconscious mind.  Visualize your progress down the entrance of the cave.  Descend down into the earth.  What you see will be just for you and just your journey so the surroundings of the cave and the descent will be strictly yours.  You may find yourself ending up in an underground meadow that looks like the world above, a forest or other fantastic landscapes.  You may wander around once you “arrive in the lower world” for a little while.  You may see several animals and creatures about.  The general thought on finding your power animal is seeing the same animal three times.  If you do then ask it if it is your power animal or totem.  Don’t be discouraged if you do not find an answer the first time in the lower world but try again later that day or the next day.  You will find your power animal.

Sometimes they are not trusting at first because we, as adults, have forgotten our connection to them and how to work with them.  Be patient with them and they will in turn be patient with you as you rekindle this long lost relationship. 🙂 Over the course of the next few days I will talk a little bit about each of my primary power animals, their energies and how I honor and work with them.

Samhain – A look at last week’s ritual

Samhain Altar at the completion of the ritual.

Samhain Altar at the completion of the ritual.

Last Thursday, Sacred Mists had our Sabbat Ritual for Samhain.  We do this on an alternate day for availability and attendance.  With Halloween being so busy and the weekend of being filled with activities, we choose an alternate day so that our students can be present with the Circle and enjoy our Sabbat.

This year, we did something a little different.  Different in that I wrote and led the Sabbat instead of our traditional ritual written and led by our founder Lady Lorien.  The ritual I wrote was the completion of a cycle I began in February of this year.  At Pantheacon this year, I was gifted with the information to present this particular ritual and meditation for this year and as such it was an amazing process filled with spirit and Deity.  When you channel a ritual during the writing process, you are never for sure, until the end that the ritual is going to meet the needs of the group you will be offering it to.  I feel this ritual met and exceeded the needs of my circle and after both rituals I felt simply wonderful.

Smoke from the Ancestral messages + offering

Smoke from the Ancestral messages + offering

A little about this ritual I asked everyone to prepare both a message to their ancestors for Hades and something you wish to remove from your life, be it a habit, a health issue or something else to be replaced with something helpful that Persephone will take to the underworld to plant in her rose garden. From this fertilizer helpful + positive things will come to each of us.   This was to be a ritual of transformation as well as ancestral.

Flare up from Ancestral messages + offerings

Flare up from Ancestral messages + offerings

Both instances of the ritual were incredibly powerful for me and I felt major shifting within beginning.  During the second ritual it was dusk into full dark here in California and something clicked in that ritual that just was immense for me personally.

One of the things that I did for this ritual was to have the ancestral messages and the release + welcome written on special versions of my Color Magick Sizzling Spell Paper that is sold at the Sacred Mists Shoppe.  If you have never worked with my paper before, I must share with you that it’s positively amazing to work with for spell and ritual work.

As I worked through each aspect of this ritual and performed on behalf of my coven & circle I felt a shift deep within my spirit that I am still working to understand fully.  The veil, has seemingly, been lifted from my eyes and the darkness and fog that has followed me for more than a year now seems to be dissipating.  I am seeing more “light” than I have in sometime.

The last thing I wish to share from the ritual is a super short (6 second) video of the release + welcome offerings as they burnt.  It was a beautiful and fiery display!
