Awareness, it’s a word that’s tossed around a lot these days. Usually it’s used in conjunction with the latest popular cause, but what does it mean to us as Pagans? Well, I kinda think it’s a HUGE chunk of what we’re all about.
As we go along our respective Paths, we must become “Aware” of a great many things. We must become aware of Our Surroundings, Ourselves, Universal Energies, and the Cycles of Nature.
So what does it mean exactly…to become aware? It is taking the things you know (or think you know) to a whole new level of understanding. All of those Oprah “Aha Moments”, those would be moments of gaining awareness with a nice catch phrase.
Now here’s where I ramble a bit (I know how y’all love it when the Pixie rambles, lol). Let’s break down those few broader categories I mentioned previously.
Awareness of Our Surroundings:
This goes way beyond “I’m standing on the corner of 31st & Elm ST and it’s raining.” Being aware of your surroundings includes the moods and behaviors of those you come into contact with, as well as an understanding of how your words and/or actions may effect them. It is being able to sense the overall “mood” in a room, or even an area outdoors. It also goes to practical things, like knowing which way you’re headed by being able to use the path of the sun. Paying attention to, and understanding the moods of pets and wildlife. In other words “being in tune” with the people and nature that are all around us. If you are plugged into your surroundings, things tend to go more smoothly and things are less hectic…at least in my experience. If I am feeling out of touch, well, then I truly feel lost…I become discombobulated (<= love that word!) and things just become chaotic. Once I take a moment to ground and center myself once again…things become much clearer and I am a happy Pixie once more.
Awareness of Self:
This is perhaps the most difficult for many. It involves delving into One’s history and exploring even the nasty bits, learning from every incident. Understanding why we did what we did, and hopefully to know we have grown since then. It is to be mindful of our thoughts, and our words, as well as our body language. It is knowing that every thought, word, or action we think, say, or do will send ripples through the Universe….creating some kind of change. Whether these changes are for good or ill, depends largely on the intent of the original action. Being self aware means accepting responsibility for the changes we help to create.
Awareness of Universal Energies:
As Pagans/Witches, we know that all things are connected. True awareness of this connection is where the Magick happens! Knowing which phase of the moon will give your spell the most mojo is powerful! I personally believe that you can work any magick at anytime, it’s all in the wording….you just have to be able to mold your words and intent to fit the energies of the moment. Ya just gotta tune in.
Awareness of the Cycles of Nature:
Birth, Death, Rebirth…The Wheel of The Year, these are things that we have a fairly simple time understanding on an academic level. Being aware of them, however, comes from the core of our being and is an ever evolving process (much like self awareness).
OK, so I’ve gone on and on, and have probably told you things you already knew…but who knows, maybe you (or I) simply needed to be reminded to be mindful. If that’s the case, then this was a useful post after all.
I suppose I should begin with a general definition of what an Indigo is, so you’re not scratching your head throughout this piece wondering if I’m talking about humans evolving into large Smurfs or something. LOL
According to Doreen Virtue, author of The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children, The Characteristics of an Indigo are:
~ Strong willed
~ Born 1978 or later [Isleen's Note: This would be the Mass Majority of them. Many Indigos were born long before 1978. See Article: Indigo Generations ]
~ Headstrong
~ Creative, with an artistic flair for music, jewelry making, poetry, etc
~ Prone to addictions
~ An old soul as if they’re 13, going on 43
~ Intuitive or psychic, possibly with a history of seeing angels or deceased people.
~ An isolationist, either through aggressive acting out or through fragile introversion.
~ Independent and proud, even if they’re constantly asking you for money.
~ Possesses a deep desire to help the world in a big way
~ Waivers between low self esteem and grandiosity.
~ Bores easily.
~ Has probably been diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD
~ Prone to insomnia, restless sleep, nightmares or difficulty/fear of falling asleep.
~ Has a history of depression, or even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
~ Looks for real, deep and lasting friendships.
~ Easily bonds with plants and animals.
Ms. Virtue also points out other traits or tendencies including:
~ A temper.
~ A warrior spirit.
~ An ability to detect when people are lying or situations are out of integrity.
~ Have a lot of Indigo Blue in their auras.
~ Highly sensitive to outside energies.
~ Sensitive to chemicals.
Doreen Virtue is one of many authors who regularly write of Indigo Children – A term that now, frankly, annoys me. Why? Well, if a vast majority were born starting in 1978, then a vast majority can no longer be considered ‘children’. But, that’s just me ‘Getting my Indigo Up’ LOL.
But I digress…So much of the information out there regarding Indigos has a very Mystic quality to it. Many books and articles make it sound as though Indigos are here to “save humanity”, and make a point of putting their “special abilities” in the forefront.
While many of the authors wish to merely explain what has been called the “Indigo Phenomenon”, it seems to me that it has turned into an unwitting exploitation of those who fit into the category. They unintentionally place huge amounts of pressure on these individuals to become and do something remarkable.
When I was first began my studies at Sacred Mists, I read an article that was posted by Lady Raven Moonshadow titled “Are You an Adult Indigo?”. I had no idea what the title was referring to, but felt strongly compelled to check it out. I was astounded to find that this article was describing me. It described me so intimately, yet I wasn’t mentioned (seriously, how could I be mentioned? It’s not like the author Knew me. Lol). I was totally flabbergasted and delighted all at the same time. FINALLY, I was able to explain (to a degree) my life experiences up to that point. I was elated to know that there were others like me. Knowing that there were others that came before me, and even more that came after. It was comforting…I mean, nobody wants to feel like a freak, right?
I scoured the internet and read many books, drinking in everything I could. Now, however, I have begun to realize that there is no real information out there…no answers in print for those of us who were/are seeking them. The answers are out there…but not in any book. The answers lie within each and every one of us.
Each of us, as Human Beings, has a purpose in This Life. One does not have to be an Indigo or a Crystal to be important and ‘special’. I have come to realize that the main difference between “Us” (Indigos/Crystals) and “Them” (those who are not) could be as simple as how “plugged in” we are to the Universal Web, and our drive to do something regarding the information we are privy to as a result.

OK, so today may be the 15th, but you’d think it was the 3rd. Why? You ask?? Well, because I saw 3s ALL DAY LONG!
As some of you may know (and if you don’t, you’re about to find out lol) I work in a bank. So, naturally, I see numbers all day long. So why was today so unusual? Well, almost every check I cashed today seemed to have a dollar amount that ended in 3. Not only that, but the time I say to myself “huh, no 3s in this transaction” I look at the customer’s I.D. and it expires in ’13 and his birthday was 3/13/83. Uhhh, ok so maybe there ARE 3s in this transaction, LOL.
Anyway, this got me thinking (dangerous, I know) why “3″? What is the significance of “3″?
As a Witch/Wiccan I automatically think of the Law of Return (aka: Threefold Law). Y’know, whatever you put out to The Universe comes back atcha threefold.
And as an avid Charmed fan I think of The Power of Three, LOL.
Then there’s the groups of three: Mind/Body/Spirit, Maiden/Mother/Crone, The Three Phases of the Moon, Past/Present/Future…you get the idea.
Three Represents Creative power & growth. Three is a moving forward of energy, Three overcomes duality, Three manifests and synthesises. Three is both Receptive and Expressive.
So what does all of that mean?? I know it, but how does it pertain to me? I went looking for some answers (as I like to know things) and I found this on whats-your-sign.com:
Three: The spiritual meaning of number Three deals with magic, intuition, fecundity, and advantage. The number Three invokes expression, versatility, and pure joy of creativity. Three is also a time identifier as it represents Past, Present and Future. Consecutive Threes in your life may symbolize the need to express yourself creatively, or consider your present directional path in relation to past events and future goals. Three may also represent promising new adventures, and assurance of cooperation from others whom you may require help. Three typically symbolizes reward and success in most undertakings.
OK, that actually made some sense to me. I have some new things I am working on as a result of my responsibilities as a Student Council member at Sacred Mists , as well as some things I am doing in my mundane life….I am a very creative person, and I try to work it into everything I do. But it’s the part that states that the new endeavors will be promising and that there is much cooperation and support from others. TOTALLY making some sense. And ya know what? No matter how many times I see things manifest, no matter how many times I read the Tarot accurately, no matter how many of my ‘feelings’ turn out to be correct….I still find it amazingly COOL! LOL
Anyway, I’m sure there’s something deeper to it, but I’m just too tired to figure it out. But I think I’m on the right track.
If you’ve got any insights, I’m all ears.
Blessings & Light…
Isleen
