6 – Be a Team Player
Now, this isn’t exactly meant in the whole “Corporate Machine” sense of the phrase, because I really and truly do despise most everything “The Establishment” tries to shove down our throats as “How to be a Productive Member of Society”. What I mean is, as brilliant as he was in his own right, he understood that being able to work effectively with others made it possible to create some incredible things. Throughout his career he had successful collaborations with many other brilliant artists, and I don’t ever recall reading anything where such-n-such musician/director/actor made any remarks that would peg Bowie as difficult to work with in any way.
The list is pretty impressive too: John Lennon (Fame), Queen (Under Pressure), Roxy Music’s Brian Eno (Heroes), Mick Jagger (Dancing in the Streets), Iggy Pop (Sister Midnight), Trent Reznor (I’m Afraid of Americans), Lou Reed (Transformer album), Luther Vandross (Young Americans), Bing Crosby (Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy), Tina Turner (Tonight), Nile Rodgers (Let’s Dance)…the list, much like the beat, goes on…and this is JUST the list of musical collaborations. Add his acting credits to this and the number of artists he worked with is truly astounding.
Anyway, the point is, his very non-diva work ethic was something I took note of as a young Pixie.
5 – Always Be Yourself…Even if You’re Someone Different Every Day
David Bowie came on the scene in his own unique way. As time passed, he was constantly changing up his look, experimenting with new and different things, exploring different aspects of himself, bending gender perceptions, and generally just blowing people’s minds. He wasn’t afraid to share his “oddity” with the world, and while many may not have been sure what the hell they were looking at at times, many more saw a part of themselves in him. A part that they may have felt was “too weird” or “too different” for people to understand or love. Yet, here was Bowie, flaunting his very eclectic and ever-morphing self before the world in a very unapologetic manner and he was indeed loved for it. He was loved by the masses that felt like the misunderstood outsider…so, y’know every teenager that at the time, or any time since, that didn’t follow the crowd or fit into the mainstream. His career continued on and on and he continued to be loved, successful, profound, respected, revered, and relevant. He made it ok, even COOL to be different and quirky. Something this rather unique Pixie found reassuring. I didn’t always feel awesome about being different, but Bowie and the unique individuals he inspired (Duran Duran, Boy George, Depeche Mode, Annie Lennox, Madonna, The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, etc…) always managed to make me feel better in my own skin and slowly learn to embrace my fabulously freakish self.
4 – You’re Never Too Cool to Work with Muppets
There’s really nothing else to be said about this, because I think it speaks for itself. 😉
3 – Lovers Never Lose, Gentleness Clears Your Soul, and Fear’s Just in Your Head
The lyrics say it all…and more…
2 – Something Beautiful Can Come from a Tragic Story
Of the multitudes of songs, quotes, and movie roles that he gave us throughout the decades of my life (and the few years before my life began) there is one song that struck me harder and deeper than any other. Space Oddity is very simple in its composition, tragic in its story, and beautiful in its entirety. It starts out hopeful and thrilling as our hero Major Tom blasts off into space. The world is excited and proud and wants to know all there is to know about our brave explorer. We experience his awe as he describes the spectacular vastness that he is witnessing…and then, everything goes wrong. Chances are, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know…because who doesn’t know this song??? Anyway, I cannot accurately describe the profound impact this song has had on me. It reaches into my soul and touches something that fills me with love, wonder, sadness…and somehow…joy…all at the same time.
1 – Live Your Life Robustly and on YOUR Terms…Right to the End
This remarkable inspirational entity had so much to say, that he never stopped creating and sharing parts of himself with us. He was ill, and knew his time was short, yet he kept creating and lived his life to the fullest every day with very few knowing that anything was wrong. He was a very busy bee in his last years. He spearheaded and wrote the score for the off Broadway production of Lazarus; a musical based on the sci-fi classic “The Man Who Fell to Earth” in which he played the lead role in 1976. At the same time he was in studio laying down the tracks to his final album Blackstar, as well as filming the videos for the first two singles “Blackstar” and “Lazarus”.
Both of his final projects are very real representations of a man coming to terms with his mortality. For a rock star he was an extraordinarily private man, yet in these works he shares with us the most intimate parts of himself. The album is poignant, brilliant, and exceedingly beautiful…I’ve no doubt that his production of Lazarus is the same (judging by the ticket sales throughout its run, I think I’m correct in my assumption).
I wish I could thank him for these generous gifts he’s bestowed upon us…and it may sound funny to you…or maybe it won’t…I just had a thought to the tune of Space Oddity:
“Tell Bowie we love him very much” echoed by David’s own ethereal voice saying “He knows”…
Divination Method: The Goddess Guidance Oracle
Card(s) Drawn: Ostara, Green Tara
Key Word(s): Fertility (Ostara), Start Delegating (Green Tara)
Ostara – “It is the perfect time to start new projects, access new ideas, and give birth to new conditions.”
Green Tara – “Ask others (including me) to help you, instead of trying to do everything yourself.”
This coming week includes both the Winter Solstice (Yule) and Christmas, and it seems to me that this reading falls very much in line with the returning of the Light, and the Birth of the Son/Sun (depending on your spiritual path).
The days will be getting longer again in the coming days, and with the return of the Light, we shall also have the return of IDEAS!
Make note of all the wonderous thoughts and plans that occur to you this week…some may be able to be set into motion now, while others may have to wait their turn. In either case, be sure to nurture them so that they may grow.
Now, here’s where Green Tara comes in. Don’t try to do everything yourself. I know, I know, I’m not the best example when it comes to this bit of advice, but I am getting better. 😉 ANYWAY, ask for the help you need in order to make these new plans and ideas come to fruition…or even help in prioritizing which can be put off, and which should be dealt with with a bit more immediacy. Too many cooks may spoil the pot…but a farmer cannot till his fields on his own. Not very effectively anyway.
So go on, get to idea brewing and plan making…just don’t forget to do it with a little help from your friends.
Divination Method: The Secret Language of Animals Oracle Cards
Card(s) Drawn: Salmon
Key Word(s): Faith, Determination, Independence, Change
“As the hero of my own life story, I answer the quiet call of my spirit.
Change is my friend. Clarity is my power.
My life is a great adventure, always guiding me home.”
My Interpretation: What do you think of when you think of Salmon (besides the fact that you may, or may not find them delicious, lol)? I’m guessing you think of a long battle to swim upstream in order to fulfill its life’s purpose. But, what you may not think of is the sheer amount of determination it takes to do so. Salmon appears today to show us that if we focus on our goals, and refuse to give up, we can fulfill our life’s purpose. We must have faith that we will reach that place that we are meant to reach. That faith can be in our methods, ourselves, our deities, the Universe, or any combination thereof…but faith is necessary.
It is time to embrace and accept your struggles in order to overcome them and to discover the opportunities that lie beyond them. Follow your instincts, and follow your own path…everyone else may be going a different direction, but that is THEIR journey. Don’t fall into the “follow the herd” mentality, trust in yourself and look for the holes in the crowd that will let you slip past them and on to where you need to be.
It sounds daunting, and counter-intuitive to “Go against the flow”, but here’s what you may not know. Salmon does not exactly spend its whole journey fighting the current…it is actually following a series of reverse undercurrents that help it on its way home. So, like Salmon, you too must seek out those people and opportunities that can help push you in the right direction. Trust yourself enough to know that you will recognize these as they occur.
Don’t dwell on the past, nor on the difficulties of the present….and do not fear what lies ahead.
The best way I can see to convey this message is through some lyrics from Billy Joel:
“You can get just so much from a good thing. You can linger too long in your dreams. Say goodbye to the Oldies but goodies. ‘Cause the good ole days weren’t always good, and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.”
It might not be a bad idea to revisit Dory’s “Just keep swimming” philosophy either. 😉
So, that’s it. Just Keep Swimming, and Keep the Faith….and listen to Billy Joel. LOL
Divination Method: The Goddess Guidance Oracle
Card(s) Drawn: Vesta
Key Word(s): Home
Basic Message: “Your household situation is improving, either through a move or a healthy change in the occupants.”
My Interpretation: Vesta is the Roman Goddess of the Home & Hearth. She is a fire Goddess that brings both literal & emotional warmth to our homes. This is precisely what we should all focus on in the coming week. The proverbial “They” say that “Home is where the heart is”, if that is indeed true, then our heart is also where our home is.
Let me explain what I mean. Your outward environment effects your inner environment just as much as your inner environment effects the outer. I guess you could revisit the one thing I said in Wednesday’s post about finding your sparkle: “Your world won’t sparkle unless you do”. So what does that mean in regards to this? Well, it’s time to focus on finding that balance between your inner and outer environments. If you’re feeling very at home and content in your own skin, make sure where you spend your time reflects that. If you’re having a bit of trouble feeling that comfort, change your environment to encourage those feelings. It can mean cleaning out some clutter so you feel as though you can breathe. It could be rearranging the furniture, painting a room, designing & installing an art feature on your gigantic living room wall, or even something as simple as lighting some candles and listening to your favorite music. A calm, joyful, peaceful environment will coax the same feelings from within your heart. Let the fire of the candles – or of the fireplace – burn away the cold and negative (figuratively, people…Pixie does NOT want you to set fire to yourself or your home, lol).
All in all, this is a week to feel safe and loved. Some may discover that they are finally “feeling at home” for the first time in a long while. This may be due to an actual move, or perhaps a more symbolic move, such as a shift in thinking in regards to ones place in the world. Remember that “feeling at home” does not always involve a physical place…but is sometimes a feeling that is evoked by certain individuals or experiences.
Home implies intimacy, the kind that goes beyond – yet, may also include – the physical.
Home is comfort, safety, warmth, laughter, and love.
Home is where we often long to be when things get tough.
Every once in a while, life and its events get the better of us. Sometimes we let ourselves get bogged down in the stress of work and tasks that we forget to have fun. Sometimes things in our relationships don’t go as we’d hoped. Sometimes these things not only make us a little cranky…but we may also become withdrawn…or forget our dreams, how to relax & have fun…or even feel our self-worth slipping away.
When all this happens, we lose our spark. That little twinkle in our eye that tells the world we’re ready to take it on, and that it better watch out, because you’ve got some mischief up your sleeve!
It can be hard to get it back, that lovely little glint…but we can get it back. It could be as simple as hearing the right song, or string of songs, on the radio (or whatever musical device you happen to be listening to). It could be taking a few days to reconnect with old friends. It could just be getting away for a couple hours of peace and quiet so you can actually have an uninterrupted thought. A movie line, a song lyric, an incredibly astute comment by…anyone.
It can happen in many ways, sometimes we seek it out, other times it just smacks us upside the head and lets us know it’s back. lol Whatever the case, if that sparkle shows up, you’d better hang on to that sucker! That spark is what helps us to feel ALIVE! It’s what helps us find the humor in even the darkest of situations. It’s what attracts Joy into our lives.
My sparkle ran away for a few days…partly because I had to say farewell to someone I’d prefer was physically in my proximity on a day to day basis (aka: Bestest Friend in All the Land), partly due to being deficient in Vitamin D. I found it today. I upped my vitamin D, heard some of my jams on the way to work, and realized that he may be far away, but he’s always with me (So close, no matter how far…). Besides, he just recently got his own sparkle back…and remembering the glint reappearing in the eyes of my personal scoundrel (It’s a term of endearment, promise, lol) well, it made me smile. I was being a little selfish…a bit of a pouty pixie, to be honest, and I had to remind myself that everything isn’t about me.
So, if your life has gotten to be a little lackluster, start trying to see if you can find your sparkle. Trust me, it will make a WORLD of difference. ?
Divination Method: The Secret Language of Animals Oracle Cards
Card(s) Drawn: Crayfish
Key Word(s): Protection, Perseverance, Vulnerability, Regeneration
Harvesting the lessons of all that has been…
Honoring the gifts of all that is
I expand my way of seeing, being and doing in the world
For the good of all.
This week it’s time to examine the structure of our lives, and figure out what it is we need to proceed along our path. Crayfish reminds us that, while structure is good and necessary to live a healthy and fulfilling life, it can also be confining and stifle our growth.
If you’re starting to feel like you’re under a lot of pressure and the walls are closing in on you, it isn’t time to retreat inside yourself, it’s time to bust the hell out of your confinement and partake of a little growth.
When busting out of your shell, however, be sure to take stock of all you have learned to this point, and retain that which can help you as you continue on your journey. While it isn’t necessarily time to hide from the world, this process of continued Transformation and Metamorphosis, it would be prudent to exercise a little caution, as all change brings about a period of vulnerability as we become acclimated to our “new normal”. When in this vulnerable state, we have a tendency to glom on to anything that offers us comfort…but choose your sources of comfort carefully, as now would be a time when it would be very easy to fall into bad habits (old or new).
And, since, what would a post be without a Pixie Pop Culture Reference – I’m gonna share the song that was running through my head as I wrote this (the song as a whole may not be exactly relevant…but the chorus isn’t leaving my brain…so I’m putting it in yours…you’re welcome).
As we head into Turkey Day here in the U.S. I am swamped with meal preparations, and last minute things to do around the house. My Best Friend in All the Land will be driving into town to share in the festivities, and a couple other dear friends shall be bouncing in as well (although their trek is a mere 10 minutes to his 6 hours…but I digress). As things are quite hectic I have just this simple message from our 16th President to share with you today…well, as he was depicted in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, but still, it’s good advice.
I wish everyone a safe and Happy Day. Time for this Grateful Pixie to open some wine!
PARTY ON DUDES! 😉
Divination Method: The Sacred Circle Tarot
Card(s) Drawn: The Tower (Reversed), The Shaman
Key Word(s): (Tower Reversed) Continued Upheaval, Obstacles, Fear, Disruption, Dust Settling after Conflict; (The Shaman) Introspection, Solitude, Discretion
My Interpretation: Remember all that Fluctuation from last week? I’m sure you do, as the world as a whole went ’round the bend so to speak…and, at least on my own personal front, things have been a bit topsy-turvy as well (Not really bad, but it made for an interesting week). The appearance of the dreaded Tower means things will continue to be challenging in the week ahead. The only consolation I have at the moment, is that the Tower is reversed, which suggests any upheaval won’t be as sharp and drastic as it has been…but it will be just one more thing added to your pile. I feel that on a global scale this card is commenting more on the surge of irrational fear that has swelled in the hearts – and out of the mouths – of many in reaction to last week’s wide spread tragedies. On a personal level, it could be alluding to this…but is more likely pointing out that bit that keeps creeping into your head regarding a possible outcome to a worrisome situation. The Tower Reversed also suggests things are beginning to settle down, at least for the interim. So you should at least be able to catch your breath.
Luckily, two cards were pulled today, and the second one gives us an idea of how to proceed. The Shaman reminds us that we have other senses, and that sometimes relying on our eyes and ears alone doesn’t give us an accurate assessment of a situation. It’s time to take a step back, to observe, to go within, and to open your mind to the possibility that things are not always as they seem. Granted, spending your time all secluded like, and having an entire week of “soul searching me time” isn’t exactly what we can all do right now. Y’know with the whole family having, and the job doing, so we can do the bill paying and the eating (especially with the U.S. Turkey Day towards the tail end of this challenging week) that we all must take care of. The Shaman is more telling us to have a bit of discretion in our dealings and encounters this week. Take things in, rather than react. Chew on a notion for a bit before deciding what you think of it…or the person that conveyed it. Is there perhaps a reason they feel the way they do? Is it a reason that can at least help you to see how they could come to that conclusion? Basically, do not react rashly…especially since many of us will be in close proximity to large groups of family and friends in the coming week. Be sure to take time to decompress, and process. You just might learn something about yourself, others, society, or even your spirituality. What you learn may even help you through whatever it is The Tower has in store.
Be introspective in order to gain perspective.
Everyone is aware of the multiple attacks that happened in Paris this past week. The saddest part is that this was not the only horrific act of violence to occur. Two suicide bombers walked into a Beirut marketplace a day before the Paris attacks, which resulted in 44 dead and 200+ injured. Many deaths in the African villages of Ndassima & Mala (as part of ongoing religious violence) took place Monday. Tuesday saw dozens killed in a bombing in Nigeria, as well as a Russian jet destroyed by a bomb over Egypt. Add to that the seemingly endless string of fatal incidents here in the U.S. – whether they be incidents against law enforcement…by law enforcement…or yet another mass shooting.
The World as a whole is under siege by these and other assaults. This fire of violence has only been fueled by the irrational, fear & hate filled reactions by those who’ve heard of them. The masses are rejecting the idea of taking in Syrian refugees for fear that they will be terrorists. The majority of comments I have seen on social media have been disappointing to say the least. Many have come from our pool of G.O.P. presidential…candidates, but the number from regular everyday folks of all walks of life and faiths (including pagans) is overwhelming.
What people in this country seem to be forgetting is that refusing these refugees dishonors the values of this country. The Statue of Liberty tells us this herself.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
It is up to us to end the violence. Each and every one of us, as individuals, holds some level of responsibility on the journey to world peace. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was asked about his view of the Paris attacks. He commented on the levels of violence and bloodshed of the 20th century and concluded that this century’s violence is in effect a spill-over of those acts. So, what should we do? His Holiness says:
“People want to lead a peaceful lives. The terrorists are short-sighted, and this is one of the causes of rampant suicide bombings. We cannot solve this problem only through prayers. I am a Buddhist and I believe in praying. But humans have created this problem, and now we are asking God to solve it. It is illogical. God would say, solve it yourself because you created it in the first place.
We need a systematic approach to foster humanistic values, of oneness and harmony. If we start doing it now, there is hope that this century will be different from the previous one. It is in everybody’s interest. So let us work for peace within our families and society, and not expect help from God, Buddha or the governments.”
I think that’s some pretty good advice. We need to work for peace, and we need to start at home, and EXTEND that spirit of peace beyond that of our friends and family. Rain compassion down on those who need it. Do something to help someone in need. Let go of any attitudes that make you question whether or not someone in need “deserves” help…just help.
Forget about the concepts of “Us” and “Them” for we are all one. “Imagine there’s no countries. It isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace…”
I may be a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. So let’s all Imagine, and Give Peace a Chance.
Divination Method: The Sacred Circle Tarot
Card(s) Drawn: 2 of Discs
Key Word(s): Fluctuation
My Interpretation: This coming week requires us to be flexible. Change is in the air, and while it can be difficult to deal with, DO NOT DESPAIR! The 2 of discs is about maintaining balance, which means that although there may be losses…there will also be gains. We can still achieve our goals, we just have to put in the necessary work and stay on our toes. We must be able to adapt to the situation at hand. Basically, pretend you’re Jareth maintaining control of his crystal ball on his constantly fluctuating hand. 😉
Spiritually, the 2 of Disks reminds us to become…or remain in tune with the ebbs and flows of energies, and the cycles of life. Those who adapt thrive, those who do not, perish.
So, to quote R.E.O. Speedwagon: If you’re tired of the same old story, turn some pages. I’ll be here when you are ready to roll with the changes.”
